About Fenghuang Ancient Town
The former home of writer Shen Congwen offers a more focused cultural visit within the busy commercial setting. Early walks and the illuminated evening riverfront have very different moods, so choose which experience matters to you. Public lanes, managed interiors and boat products should be treated separately: walking through the town does not imply admission to every historic house or a river cruise.
Fenghuang's old town lies in Tuojiang (沱江镇), the seat of Fenghuang County. Tuojiang was earlier known as Zhen'gan (镇竿) and became a transport hub for southwestern China during the Ming and Qing dynasties. By the Qianlong era (乾隆), it had grown commercially prosperous.
The historic district also includes Chongde Hall (崇德堂), which holds relics collected by Pei Shoulu (裴守禄), and the Rainbow Bridge belvedere (虹桥风雨楼). The ancient town was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in the cultural category on 28 March 2008. The Fenghuang Ancient Town tourism zone was rated a 5A scenic area (5A景区) on 6 February 2024.

Getting to Fenghuang Ancient Town
From Fenghuanggucheng railway station, choose the current road or maglev connection to the old-town area, then check the final walk to your hotel. Accommodation inside narrow lanes may not have vehicle access at its door.
