About Hunan Embroidery Museum
Close viewing reveals how shading and fine detail can be built with thread rather than paint, while garments and decorative pieces connect the technique to different uses. The museum also runs bookable craft activities, which should be distinguished from an ordinary gallery visit. Its current venue on Chezhan North Road reopened after fire-safety works in late 2025, so older closure notices no longer describe the whole museum’s status.
The museum, on Chezhan North Road (车站北路) in Furong District, opened in 1999 as a specialized museum systematically presenting the history and techniques of Xiang embroidery (湘绣); construction was funded by the Hunan provincial government beginning in 1998. Its original exhibition space covered 810 square meters across three halls, covering the origins of Xiang embroidery, its rise, and highlights of contemporary work. A new museum building opened in 2021, with about 2,000 square meters of exhibition space and a collection of more than 4,000 items, including three grade-two and 118 grade-three cultural relics.
Xiang embroidery is one of China's four major embroidery styles (四大名绣) and is listed in the first national batch of intangible cultural heritage. The museum's exhibition theme, 'the beauty of Hunan on the point of a needle,' is presented across four themed halls: the origin of the needle tip, its rise, its flourishing, and its dream.
