About Shaoshan

The house offers a domestic-scale starting point, while the museum and monuments show how his life has been interpreted and remembered publicly. These sites form a managed visitor landscape outside the railway arrival area. Choose the specific memorials you want to enter and arrange their reservations before travel, rather than treating a transport ticket or a general tour package as guaranteed admission to each building.

Shaoshan originally referred only to a small hill in the northwest of Xiangtan County near Xiangxiang; tradition holds that when the sage-king Shun toured south and his retinue played the Music of Shao, phoenixes were drawn to the sound, giving the hill its name. The nearby village became known as Shaoshan Chong. Mao Zedong was born at Shangwuchang (上屋场) in Shaoshan Chong on 26 December 1893 and spent his childhood there. Shaoshan Commune was established in 1958, becoming Xiangtan County's Shaoshan District in 1961; a Shaoshan Management Bureau was set up in 1963 to handle tourist reception.

Shaoshan lies in the hilly region of east-central Hunan; hills dominate the terrain, and forest cover reaches nearly 50 percent. The Shaoshan mountain range runs north to south through the city; its highest peak, Shaofeng (韶峰), is counted as the seventy-first peak of Nanyue Hengshan. Average annual temperature is 16.7 degrees Celsius, average annual precipitation is 1,358 millimeters, and average annual sunshine totals 1,717 hours.

Shaoshan is a county-level city administered by Xiangtan, covering a total area of 247 square kilometers. Its tourist area was designated in the third batch of National-Level Scenic and Historic Interest Areas (国家级风景名胜区) and is a national 5A tourist attraction (国家AAAAA级旅游景区); it is described as a notable site of revolutionary commemoration.
