About Tengger Desert

For an Alxa-side introduction, Moon Lake offers a named reception route into this sand-and-water landscape. The lake's curved shore and the adjacent dunes provide two contrasting perspectives within one managed excursion. A wider multi-lake crossing is a different undertaking that needs a confirmed route, suitable vehicle and local operator.

The name Tengger, from Mongolian, means sky, describing a desert as vast and boundless as heaven. China's fourth-largest desert, it spans western Inner Mongolia, central Gansu and western Ningxia, bounded by the Helan Mountains (贺兰山) to the east, the Great Wall to the south, and the Yabulai Mountains (雅布赖山) to the west. It lies at an elevation of 1,200 to 1,400 meters and covers a total area of 36,700 square kilometers.

Dunes, lake basins, hills and flat ground interleave across the desert; dunes cover more than 70 percent of its area, mostly forming crescent-shaped chains 10 to 30 meters high, with some reaching 10 to 100 meters, and they tend to migrate to the southeast. The desert was originally a lake, and more than 400 lakes of varying size remain within it; most are freshwater and surrounded by lush grass and water plants that form the main local pasture.

What to look for

  • Moon Lake's curved shoreline within the desert basin.
  • The neighbouring dune ridges and the contrast between dry sand and lake-edge vegetation.

General visit reminders

Allow room for the terrain and weather when choosing your route. Check the operator’s current trail, shuttle and cableway notices where applicable, and confirm the return connection before setting out. A broad landscape pin does not identify every trailhead or access point.
