About Panmen city gate
The offset passages show how the defences controlled both boats and road traffic.
Wumen Bridge crosses the water outside, while Ruiguang Pagoda rises inside the old enclosure. Together these three structures give the visit a clear architectural sequence: crossing, gate and tower. The pagoda and gate have undergone repairs across several periods, and access to upper levels should be checked separately.
The gate originated in 514 BCE, when King Helü of Wu ordered Wu Zixu to build the Wu capital at Helü City; it was one of eight gates, initially named Panmen (蟠门, 'coiled gate') for a carved wooden dragon above its doorway meant to intimidate the southern state of Yue, and later renamed, using a different character meaning 'coiling,' for its winding mix of water and land. The present gate was built in 1351, and Zhang Shicheng added its barbican in 1356.
The gate combines staggered land and water passages in an L-shaped plan. The land gate has inner and outer tiers enclosing a square barbican 180 metres in circumference, with hidden chambers (藏兵洞) able to shelter hundreds of soldiers. The water gate south of it is 24 metres deep, with its own inner and outer tiers, sluice gates and wooden barriers, linked to the gate tower by a hidden passage.
Panmen was listed as a Suzhou municipal protected site in 1963, a Jiangsu provincial protected site in 1982, and a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in 2006. It is also protected, along with Hangzhou's Fengshan Gate, as part of the Grand Canal World Heritage site.
What to look for
- The water and land gates form an offset defensive arrangement.
- Wumen Bridge and Ruiguang Pagoda add a stone crossing and octagonal tower to the setting.
The surrounding area
A provincial city base for classical gardens, canals and soup-noodle breakfasts; do not confuse its old city with the distant North railway station.
