About White Deer Grotto Academy

Its courtyards bring together spaces for Confucian ritual and study: Lisheng Hall honours Confucius, while Minglun Hall recalls the teaching associated with the academy’s revival under Zhu Xi. Behind them, the small grotto and stone deer give the site’s name a physical expression. The stream and enclosing hills are an essential part of this scholarly retreat.

According to tradition, the academy began as a retreat of the Tang poet Li Bo (李渤, d. 831), who kept a white deer there in retirement, giving the site its name. It was formally established as an academy in the Southern Tang's Shengyuan era (升元), 940, known as Lushan Guoxue (庐山国学). After falling into disrepair, it was rebuilt in 1179-80 by the Song scholar Zhu Xi (朱熹), then prefect of Nankang, who laid it out after the Confucius Temple at Qufu and opened it to students in 1180.

The academy grounds cover nearly 3,000 mu (亩), with a built area of 3,800 square meters, arranged as five parallel courtyards that include the Xianxian Academy (先贤书院), the Ziyang Academy (紫阳书院) and the Yanbin Hall (延宾馆), approached through a Lingxing Gate (棂星门), Pan Pond (泮池) and Zhuangyuan Bridge (状元桥). A stele corridor east of the Zhu Xi shrine holds more than 120 inscriptions from the Song to the Qing, including examples of Zhu Xi's own calligraphy.

In front of the shrine stands the Imperial Book Pavilion (御书阁), built after the Kangxi Emperor bestowed a plaque and books on the academy. Zhu Xi's own rock inscriptions gave their names to nearby spots such as Shushi (漱石) and Liubei Pool (流杯池).
