About Zhamei Monastery
Its Tibetan Buddhist halls introduce another aspect of the region’s religious life beyond the lakeside villages. Painted religious imagery and the arrangement of the main hall with adjoining buildings reward a slow visit. The monastery is an active religious place, so ask which halls welcome visitors and follow local guidance about photography. Combine it with Yongning only as a separate inland excursion from the lake.
What to look for
- The main hall and adjoining temple buildings form a substantial monastery group.
- Painted religious imagery and thangka-style artwork give the interiors their visual focus.
