About Ragya Monastery
The hillside buildings, main hall and turning prayer wheels make the relationship between monastery and landscape particularly clear. This Gelug institution has Qing-period roots and remains active. The river-facing setting is part of the experience, but worship and residential areas have their own access boundaries.
The original name, Zhaxi Gongdelin (扎西功德林), means 'Auspicious Temple of Broad Peace' (吉祥广安寺). The later name, Gandan Zhaxi Huini (甘丹扎西回尼), means 'Source of Goodness and Auspiciousness' (具善吉祥源地). It is also called Jiachan Temple. On 15 September 1988, it was included in the fifth batch of Qinghai provincial cultural heritage sites (青海省文物保护单位), classified as ancient architecture. National protection followed in 2013, when the State Council (国务院) added the monastery to the seventh batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位). The national listing also placed it in the category of ancient architecture.
What to look for
- The monastery occupies a mountain-backed bend of the Yellow River.
