About Rongwo Monastery

Its temples and monastic colleges connect worship with the study of philosophy, ritual and the Kalachakra tradition. The prayer hall and stupas give a visible introduction to this larger educational complex. A visit gains context when paired with Regong art, but the monastery’s teaching and residential areas are not automatically open sightseeing spaces.

According to the Chinese-language account, the monastery was founded in 1301 (the fifth year of the Yuan Dade era) as a Sakya institution named Zhikagongkang (智卡贡康). It was rebuilt in 1462 by Samdan Rinchen (三木旦仁钦), whose younger brother and successor Luozhe Sengge (罗哲森格) received the honorific title Hongxiu Miaowu Guoshi (弘修妙悟国师, State Preceptor) from the Ming court and became the area's joint religious and political leader. The monastery converted to the Gelug school in 1605 and was expanded again; in 1622 the Ming Tianqi emperor bestowed a plaque reading 'Wondrous Realm of the Western Regions' (西域胜境) above the scripture hall's entrance.

English-language sources give a different founding account, saying Rongwo Samten Rinpoche established the monastery in 1341 as three temples, including the Temple of Three Buddhas and the Golden Temple. Shartsang Kaldan Gyatso (1607-1677), recognized as Samten Rinpoche's first reincarnation, founded the present monastery on these sites and in 1630 established its first monastic college, the Tsennyi Tratsang, teaching Buddhist dialectics.

After 1959 the monastery was repeatedly damaged, particularly during the Cultural Revolution, and was restored and reopened after 1980; it now has seven halls, six reincarnate lamas' residences and over 300 monks. It also houses a residence built for the tenth Panchen Erdeni, Chokyi Gyaltsen (确吉坚赞).

What to look for

  • The prayer hall gives a sense of communal religious life.
  • Stupas mark important points within the monastic setting.
  • The college tradition links the buildings with Buddhist learning.
