About Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport
Its radiating terminal piers gather around a central processing hall, while the adjoining Ground Transportation Centre links air travel with metro, railway and road transport. It replaced Liuting Airport in 2021, so the distinction matters when choosing a transfer or hotel. For a smooth arrival, first identify your onward service, then follow its signs into the transport centre rather than heading automatically to the road pickup area.
Site selection for the airport began in 2012, when Qingdao's new-airport authorities commissioned the air force's design bureau to study locations; the Jiaodong site was confirmed in May 2013 and approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China in September that year. The State Council and Central Military Commission approved construction in October 2014, and groundbreaking took place on 26 June 2015 with a planned four-year construction period. Originally due for completion in 2019, the airport was completed in June 2020 and opened for operation on 12 August 2021.
The airport occupies a planned site of 30.65 square kilometres, built in two phases, with four parallel runways and three terminal buildings: Terminal 1 in the centre, with Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 placed symmetrically to the southeast and southwest. The terminal design resembles a starfish viewed up close and suggests the character Qi (齐) when seen from a distance. The control tower, rising 93.1 meters, takes the spiral form of a conch shell, evoking a lighthouse guiding aircraft and reflecting Qingdao's maritime character.
