About Site of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party
The meeting held here in July 1921 gives the house its historical significance within what is now Xintiandi.
Museum interpretation connects the founding event with the history of Shanghai and modern China. The house was the residence of Li Hanjun at the time of the meeting. Read the domestic building and the exhibition together: one establishes the physical setting, while the other explains the people and political context.
In 1950 a Shanghai Museum researcher, Shen Zhiyu, was tasked with locating the meeting site, then known only to have been somewhere in the former French Concession; the search was complicated by changes to the neighborhood since 1921. When found, the building was in use as a noodle shop. The Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party began renting the site in September 1951 during a multi-year authentication process and purchased it in May 1952. Work to reconstruct the interior as it had appeared in 1921 continued until 1956, when it was finalized following an inspection by Dong Biwu confirming that the meeting had taken place in the downstairs rooms.
Plans for a large museum complex around the site were cancelled after the financial difficulties of the Great Leap Forward, though preparations for that approach later contributed to the scope of the surrounding Xintiandi district. In 1961 the site was designated a national cultural relic under state protection, the most important such designation in Shanghai. It closed to the public from 1966 to 1968, during the Cultural Revolution, and reopened in 1969. Its exhibits were substantially revised in 1980 to include CCP founders previously excluded, such as Chen Duxiu.
