History
This is where the city of Shanghai began. A settlement grew here from the Xining era (1068–1077) of the Northern Song, Shanghai town (上海镇) was founded in the Southern Song, and when Shanghai County was created in 1292 its seat and walled town lay within today's district. Before 1843 the area was already a busy trading centre, especially around Shiliupu (十六铺). After 1845 the British and French settlements were laid out in the north of the district, and the north and west became the centre of modern Shanghai.
The name comes from the First District of 1945, called Huangpu because it faced the river. Today's district was formed by merging with Nanshi District (南市区), the old walled town, in 2000 and with Luwan District (卢湾区) in 2011; Luwan brought in Xintiandi (新天地), Middle Huaihai Road (淮海中路) and the site of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (中共一大会址).
What to see
The Bund (外滩) runs 1.5 kilometres along the Huangpu from East Yan'an Road (延安东路) to the Garden Bridge (外白渡桥) over Suzhou Creek. More than twenty historic buildings in eclectic, Renaissance and early modern styles line it, and after Shanghai opened as a port it became the financial and trading centre of the city.
In the north-east of the old walled town, Yuyuan Garden (豫园) was begun in 1559 as the private garden of the official Pan Yunduan (潘允端). It holds the Jade Rock (玉玲珑), counted among the three famous rocks of the lower Yangtze region, and the Dianchun Hall (点春堂), headquarters of the Small Swords uprising (小刀会起义); it became a national key protected site in 1982. The City God Temple (城隍庙) and the Yuyuan Bazaar (豫园商城) lie to its south-west.
Other sights include the Confucian Temple (文庙) and Fuxing Park (复兴公园), while People's Square (人民广场), the Nanjing Road East pedestrian street (南京东路步行街), the Shanghai Grand Theatre (上海大剧院) and the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center (上海城市规划展示馆) represent the modern city.
