About Zhongshan Park

Its landscape combines English naturalistic design with elements of Chinese garden art.

The broad lawn and the white marble pavilion on its northern side give the park a clear architectural-and-landscape focus. The pavilion dates to 1935 and originally served a ceremonial role overlooking the lawn. Begin with this open composition, then continue through the planted paths. This is the Changning park, separate from similarly named parks in other cities.

The park was established in 1914 by the Shanghai Municipal Council as Jessfield Park (極司非爾花園), named after Jessfield Road, which led to it; it lay in the extra-settlement roads area beyond the formal boundaries of the Shanghai International Settlement but was administered by the Settlement's authority. The site had previously been the southern half of a private garden owned by British property developer H. Fogg, whose firm Jenner Hogg & Co. gave the park its other popular name, Zhaofeng Garden (兆豐花園); the northern half of the property was sold to the Episcopal Church to build St John's University. The park was renamed Zhongshan Park in 1944 in honor of Sun Yat-sen.

The park lies centrally within Changning District. Suzhou Creek and the East China University of Politics and Law lie to its north, and a shopping mall with a tall skyscraper, Cloud Nine, stands southwest of the park. The grounds include a large collection of trees and flowers, and broad meadow areas used for kite-flying and sport.
