About Changfeng Park
The landscaped park was developed in the 1950s as a substantial public green space in Putuo.
Lake and hill offer two different ways to read the designed landscape: one opens broad views across water, while the other changes the viewpoint above the surrounding paths. Recreation attractions within the wider park operate separately from an ordinary garden walk, so check any activity you plan to add rather than assuming it is included.
Construction began on 4 April 1957, when the park was initially named Huxi Park (沪西公园), for western Shanghai. Part of it opened to the public on 1 July 1958 as Biluohu Park (碧萝湖公园), and the whole park was completed in 1959. That year the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee's deputy secretary, Wei Wenbo, renamed it Changfeng Park, taking the name from a phrase in the Book of Song, and named its artificial lake Yinchu Lake (银锄湖) and artificial hill Tiebi Hill (铁臂山) after lines from a 1958 poem by Mao Zedong.
The lake, covering 143,000 square meters, lies at the center of the park, with a dock renting motorized, pedal and hand-rowed boats as well as larger excursion vessels. The artificial hill was built up from earth excavated for the lake, and rises 26 meters over an area of 10,000 square meters. Changfeng Ocean World, built into the lake bed 13 meters below the surface, opened in 1999 as China's first marine aquarium and was purchased by Merlin Entertainments in 2012.
The park was also the venue for the first five editions of the Shanghai International Flower Festival. It was renovated starting in 2009, and from 10 October 2024 entered a two-year renovation project during which it remains partly open and partly closed.
What to look for
