About Deng Xiaoping Former Residence

The house gives a sense of the domestic setting of his early life, while the exhibition hall uses photographs, documents and reconstructed scenes to tell the subsequent biography. Its staggered sloping roofs are a visible part of the modern memorial design. Visiting the house and exhibition separately helps distinguish original domestic buildings from later interpretation.

The residence, also called the Old Deng Family Courtyard (邓家老院子), stands in Paifang Village (牌坊村), Xiexing Town (协兴镇), Guang'an District, Guang'an, and was built in the late Qing dynasty by Deng Xiaoping's great-grandfather Deng Xinzao (邓心早) and grandfather Deng Keda (邓克达). Deng Xiaoping was born there on 22 August 1904, in the thirty-seventh year of the Guangxu reign, and lived in the house for about fifteen years.

The site was named a National Patriotic Education Base in 1997 and listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in 2001. Deng Xiaoping's former schools, the Guang'an County Senior Primary School (广安县立高等小学堂) and Beishan Primary School (北山小学堂), were added to that listing in 2006, and the Silkworm House Courtyard (蚕房院子) and Hanlin Courtyard (翰林院子) were added in 2013.

To mark the centenary of Deng Xiaoping's birth, the Communist Party's Central Committee approved construction of a Deng Xiaoping's Residence Exhibition Hall covering about 10 acres, with a building area of 3,800 square meters, combining eastern Sichuan folk architectural style with a modern design; it opened on 13 August 2004.
