About Erlangshan Labahe Scenic Area

The Ministry of Ecology and Environment's registry of Sichuan nature reserves lists Labahe as a provincial-level reserve of 23,437.3 hectares, founded on 2 April 1963, with giant pandas and takin among its main protected species. The National Forestry and Grassland Administration records that in 1963 China designated its first four giant-panda nature reserves specifically for panda protection — Wolong, Baishuihe, Wanglang and Labahe — together covering about 900 square kilometres.

China News Service, in a report of 18 March 2021 headlined on a wild giant panda strolling along a road in Labahe Nature Reserve, described how on that morning a panda crossed a forest road at an unhurried pace inside the Giant Panda National Park in Tianquan County and disappeared into a stand of arrow bamboo; the photographs were taken by county natural-resources and planning staff who were working inside the reserve at the time. Staff at the national park's Tianquan management station assessed the animal as a healthy adult and noted that pandas often migrate over long distances during the breeding season. The same report recorded Tianquan County's forest cover at 73.9 per cent, supporting 38 species of nationally protected wildlife including the wild giant panda and 40 species of nationally protected wild plants including the dove tree, and noted that the county has integrated Labahe Nature Reserve with the Giant Panda Habitat World Natural Heritage site, Erlang Shan National Forest Park and the Erlang Shan provincial scenic and historic area into a single classification system with graded, zoned management.

  • The dove tree (珙桐), one of the 40 nationally protected plant species recorded in Tianquan County.
  • The reserve's place in the group of protected areas the county has brought into one classification system, alongside the Giant Panda Habitat World Natural Heritage site and Erlang Shan National Forest Park.
