About Huangjing Old Forest

The park has a planned area of 9,122.6 hectares with 99.14 percent forest cover, and average annual temperatures of about 13.1 to 17.8 degrees Celsius. Sichuan Online describes its forest as the only well-preserved subtropical primeval evergreen broadleaf forest at this latitude on Earth, reporting that it is known as "the last virgin land on the 28th parallel north".

Sichuan Online describes the scenic area as one of towering ancient trees and unbroken forest. The park holds 1,699 species of wild higher plants, mainly native and rare trees.

Sichuan Online reported on 20 April 2026 that staff from the Gulin County Chishui Source Huangjing Old Forest Protection Center, conducting a biodiversity survey, had recently photographed 18 specimens of shuijinglan (水晶兰), popularly called the 'ghost flower', in one area at about 1,700 meters on Tiger Head Mountain within the reserve; the article gives the plant's proper name as 球果假水晶兰, a saprophytic herb of the heath family that contains no chlorophyll and cannot photosynthesise, and classes it as a nationally near-threatened rare plant. A senior forestry engineer with the county's natural resources and planning bureau said the species appears only in well-preserved, ecologically intact primeval forest, requiring very high air humidity, abundant humus and a stable relationship with specific symbiotic fungi.
