About Jiazhou Ancient City and Suji Ancient Town
Jiazhou's restoration work has covered the Laoxiaoding historic building complex, the Leshan Confucius Temple, the Dragon God Shrine, the Jiazhou ancient city wall, the historic buildings of Guihualou Lane, and 126 old residences; Sichuan Daily reports the city has nearly 3,000 years of history. Shizhong District's own tourism planning treats Jiazhou's old city and Suji ancient town as two separate key areas alongside the Leshan Giant Buddha, rather than as one site.
Suji formed around the Sui dynasty, originally called Guihua Market, with over 1,400 years of history; local legend attributes its name either to a hermit surnamed Su, given name Ji, who lived there, or to a tradition that Su Dongpo once came to inspect the area. The town preserves the Tang-dynasty Tianwang Temple, the Qing-dynasty Rugong Bridge and over 30 other cultural-relic sites, and is reported to have served historically as a commercial hub and the starting point of the Mount Emei pilgrimage route; its scenic area itself carries a national AAA rating, while a separate site within it, the Buried-Wood Culture Expo Garden, is AAAA-rated.
Suji's food culture is locally rooted: the techniques for making its sesame-oil rice-crisp candy and its 'tilted-leg beef' hotpot have each been designated Sichuan provincial intangible cultural heritage.
