About Sanxingdui Museum
Its museum setting is distinct from the archaeological excavation area, although the discoveries give the galleries their purpose. The new building brought earlier collections and more recent finds together, with pottery, jade and gold adding to the better-known bronzes. Rather than treating the objects as unexplained mysteries, look at how materials, scale and archaeological context differ between displays. The conservation story is also important: excavation, restoration and interpretation determine what can be understood from fragmented finds. Guanghan is a separate destination from central Chengdu, so the museum deserves a deliberate travel plan.
What to look for
- The sacred bronze tree is a major collection highlight and shows the scale and complexity of ancient Shu bronze work.
- Standing bronze figures and masks present distinctive approaches to the human form.
- Jade, pottery and gold objects broaden the archaeological story beyond the most photographed bronze pieces.
