About Zhu De's Hometown
The residence, the Zhu family's second home after settling in Ma'an, comprises a main house and east and west wing rooms, with a plaque inscribed by Guo Moruo above its front gate. The main hall and kitchen keep their original earthen walls; the east wing (a silkworm room, a wine-brewing room and a guest room) uses traditional timber-frame construction. It displays items from Zhu De's youth, including a study table, a tung-oil lamp, a book-carrying basket, an abacus and an inkstone, and the silkworm room retains its temperature-control skylight and silk-reeling wheel; outside are the stone roller and millstone he used in farm labor, a mulberry tree he planted, and Linlang Well, which he helped dig as a child.
Having fallen into disrepair, the residence was restored from June 2005 and reopened in May 2006. It was designated a county-level cultural-relics protection unit in 1973, a Sichuan provincial key protection unit in 1980, and a national key cultural-relics protection unit by the State Council in January 1988; it was named a national patriotic-education base for students in 1996 and a national patriotic-education demonstration base in 1997.
The wider Zhu De's Hometown scenic area covers 52.5 square kilometers across five component areas — Linlang Mountain, Baiyang Lake, Penglai Pavilion, Chaqi Mountain and Ma'an ancient town — with a 5.6-square-kilometer core area including the residence and the Zhu De Memorial Hall. It holds three national key cultural-relics protection units and eleven provincial-level units, was listed among the 100 National Classic Red Tourism Scenic Areas in 2005, rated national AAAA-level in 2006, and became Nanchong's second national AAAAA-level scenic area (after Langzhong Ancient City).
