About Chihkan Tower
The site began as the Dutch Fort Provintia, but the halls and pavilions now visible also reflect later Chinese construction. This makes it a place to read changing uses and architectural styles rather than imagine the entire complex as an intact Dutch fortress.
Look for Haishen Temple and Wenchang Pavilion, then spend time with the stone inscriptions. Nine imperial steles carried by turtle-like bixi creatures were moved here from the South Gate area. Their scale and carved bases provide a different kind of historical evidence from the buildings above.
What to look for
- The site combines the remains of Fort Provintia with later halls.
- Haishen Temple and Wenchang Pavilion show subsequent uses of the compound.
- Nine imperial steles stand on carved bixi bases.
The surrounding area
