About Tianjin Binhai International Airport

Its terminal complex developed from the earlier Zhangguizhuang airfield into Tianjin's passenger and cargo gateway. For visitors, the important feature is the connection between the terminals and the ground-transport center, including Metro Line 2. Confirm the terminal on your flight booking and choose the actual city or coastal destination for the onward journey; the airport name alone does not place you beside Binhai's attractions.

Because of its proximity to Beijing Capital Airport, development of Tianjin Binhai International Airport was constrained for a long period. Growth accelerated once the Binhai New Area became part of national development strategy. Terminal 1, for international flights, began operating on 28 April 2008, and Terminal 2, for domestic flights, entered service in August 2014. On 15 December 2017 the airport's annual passenger throughput passed 20 million.

Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and the planned Terminal 3 were all designed by British architect Lee Polisano of KPF London, with the terminal exteriors inspired by the shape of traditional Tianjin kites. Terminal 1 uses a pier layout, with a main-building floor area of 116,000 square meters and a total area of 250,000 square meters, a maximum height of 43 meters and capacity for 10 million passengers a year. Terminal 2, to its east, has a total floor area of about 248,000 square meters and is connected to Terminal 1 by two corridors; it is used mainly for domestic routes.

In 2019 the airport began preliminary work on a third expansion phase, with a Terminal 3 of about 400,000 square meters planned for 2020 to 2023. A 2021 municipal transport plan called for extending the runway, building a second runway and a satellite hall, aiming to create a three-terminal, three-runway hub.
