About Tianfei Palace Archaeological Museum

Excavations revealed successive Yuan, Ming and Qing layers, including architectural fragments and everyday objects linked with historic Dazhigu. The museum connects Mazu worship with shipping and Tianjin's early growth; a Ming shipwreck from Zhangwan adds a tangible canal-transport connection. This excavated Hedong site is distinct from the standing Tianhou Temple in Ancient Culture Street across the city.

The museum was established on the site of the Tianfei Palace ruins as one of twenty public-welfare projects promised by the Tianjin municipal government; it broke ground in August 2001, was completed by year's end, and opened on 1 May 2002. It is Tianjin's first archaeological site museum and was recognized as a national second-class museum in 2009. The China Cultural Heritage Academy carried out conservation work on the ruins in 2016, after which the museum itself was renovated from March 2017 and reopened in December 2018.

The museum covers 6,000 square meters, with a built area of 3,000 square meters. Its central hall preserves the foundation of a Yuan-dynasty structure together with the Ming- and Qing-dynasty foundations of the Tianfei Palace's main hall, surrounded by two-story exhibition galleries. In the courtyard stands a mast-shaped column bearing a gilded image of Mazu at its top, its stone-clad shaft carved from bottom to top with ocean-themed reliefs from the Yuan, Ming and Qing periods. The permanent exhibition, titled 'Fair Winds and Unfurled Sails Past Zhigu' (风正帆悬过直沽), holds a collection of over 7,800 pieces or sets.

What to look for
