About Ranwu Lake
It feeds the Parlung River and is framed by mountains and glacier country, but its accessible shores also include fields, grazing animals and village buildings. The Bangtso section near Ranwu town has a white stupa and religious buildings along the lake, adding a cultural foreground to the water. Concentrate on the town-side shore and a designated viewpoint; distant glaciers are separate excursions with their own access arrangements.
The lake surface lies at an elevation of 3,850 metres, and the water covers an area of 22 square kilometres. Its main surrounding landforms are the Gangri Gabu Mountains (岗日嘎布山脉) and the Laigu Glacier Group (来古冰川群). Surface runoff is the principal source of the lake's water supply. The lake district has a warm, humid climate: its mean annual temperature is 8.5 degrees Celsius, while mean annual precipitation amounts to 849.7 millimetres. Both mountain landslides and debris flows helped block the river channel that formed the lake. It forms one of the headwaters of the Parlung River (帕隆藏布), a tributary of the Yarlung Tsangpo (雅鲁藏布江).
What to look for
- The lake’s mountain-framed basin and the beginning of the Parlung river system.
- Bangtso’s white stupa and the pastoral lakeside near Ranwu town.
