About Tingri
Its earlier role as a trading post connected Tibetan wool, livestock and salt with goods brought from Nepal. The surrounding plain opens towards the Himalayan peaks, while Tingri Lankor preserves the religious association with Padampa Sangye. Use the town as an orientation and service stop, with a modest local visit before any separately arranged journey towards Everest.
The local monastery was founded in 1097 by a Buddhist teacher from southern India who made five journeys to Tibet and died in 1117. It was built within his meditation cave and became the seat of the Dampapa school. The surrounding upland basin lies more than 4,500 metres above sea level. Shallow, fast-flowing streams of snowmelt cross its grassy meadows, supporting grazing. Gazelles, blue sheep, antelopes and wild asses formerly occurred abundantly on the plain, but most of these animals have since disappeared.
What to look for
- The open Tingri Plain and its Himalayan skyline, with visibility dependent on the weather.
- Tingri Lankor, associated with Padampa Sangye’s meditation retreat and teaching tradition.
The surrounding area
A separate western urban centre anchored by Tashilhunpo, suitable for a considered extension from Lhasa.
