About Xinjiang Corps Reclamation Museum

Its displays use tools, clothing, photographs and reconstructed scenes to describe settlement, farming and the development of the Corps. A heavily patched coat and large kantuman digging tool give a more tangible view of working conditions than dates alone. The building itself is part of the historical setting.

The institution began as Shihezi Reclamation Museum (石河子军垦博物馆), which opened in 1995. It moved to its present building in October 2004 and adopted its current name. Conversion work retained the building's exterior while renovating its interior for displays and collection storage. Further upgrades were completed in 2010 and 2021.

As of 2021, the museum held 27,659 objects or sets, including fifty-five classified as precious cultural relics. Its larger acquisitions include retired Y-5 and Y-11 transport aircraft donated in 2007. In 2023, a digital museum was launched after two-dimensional and three-dimensional data were collected for 350 objects. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions and activities for International Museum Day.

What to look for

  • Tools and patched clothing provide material evidence of early working life.
  • The former headquarters building connects the exhibition with Shihezi’s development.
