About Duku Highway Qiao'erma Rest Stop
The county government records that the cemetery is a prefecture-level revolutionary martyrs' memorial site and a Nilka red-education, party-member model education and national-defence education base, and that it was named an autonomous-region classic red-tourism site in 2021. The Tianshan Duku Highway Martyrs' Monument stands inside it on a site of 462 square metres; it was completed on 28 September 1984 and built by the autonomous-region party committee and government together with the Xinjiang Military District, repaired in 2004 with investment from the Xinjiang Transport Department, and in 2006 the county invested 1.8 million yuan to rebuild and expand it into the cemetery that exists today. The monument base is 21.5 m wide at the bottom and 2.4 m at the top and the shaft is 17.3 m high; 168 martyrs' names are listed on it and the reverse carries an inscription in Chinese and Uyghur. The cemetery holds the graves of 168 soldiers who died building the road, each with a granite marker carrying the man's biography, and its memorial hall and relic room display several hundred objects from the construction, including tools, photographs and drawings.
The autonomous-region transport department records that the highway was built from 1974 by several tens of thousands of soldiers and opened to traffic in September 1983, running from Dushanzi in the north to Kuqa in the south; it crosses four ice passes, five rivers and three high-mountain tunnels, and 168 road-builders died on it. The department gives its length as 562.75 km, more than 280 km of it above 2,000 m, and quotes China National Geographic's description of it as a scenic highway spanning the spine of the Tianshan. No cited source designates any stopping place, lay-by or viewpoint on the Qiao'erma section. The only listing in the evidence set that bears on stopping there is the autonomous-region culture and tourism department's page of practical advice, which names Qiao'erma among the highway's refuelling points and lists charging points at Maoliugou service area, the Nalati tourism service area, the Bayanbulak self-driving camp and Kuqa.
