About Tianchi / Heavenly Lake
The contrast between the water, forest and higher mountain terrain is its main appeal. Lower small lakes and the main shore form different parts of the scenic area, so plan the route around the current transport stops. Mountain visibility varies; a visit can still focus on the lakeside forest when the high peaks are clouded.
The name Tianchi derives from an inscription written in 1783 by Mingliang (明亮), the Qing commander at Urumqi. A nature reserve centred on Bogda Peak (博格达峰) was established in June 1980. In November 1982, the scenic area entered the first group of National Key Scenic Areas (国家第一批重点风景名胜区). The northern slopes around the peak joined UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme in 1990.
The lake is a moraine-dammed basin with a narrow outline, about 3 kilometres long from north to south and up to 1.5 kilometres across. Its surface covers 4.9 square kilometres and its greatest depth is 105 metres. The wider scenic area combines four vertical natural landscape belts, including forest, grassland, snowy mountains and glaciers.
What to look for
- Conifer-covered slopes frame the main lake.
- The surrounding terrain connects the lake with the higher Bogda mountain landscape.
