About Black Oil Mountain

The scenic area lies two kilometres north-east of the Karamay urban area, and Xinjiang Daily's photo report records dozens of oil seepage points discharging black crude oil there, with the oil pools mirroring the sky. The page describes Black Oil Mountain as a naturally formed group of petroleum asphalt mounds: over more than a hundred million years crude oil in the strata escaped along rock fissures under formation pressure, light fractions evaporated, and the viscous oil gradually congealed and piled up with sand and soil into the mounds. In earlier years local people came to collect crude oil to supplement their livelihoods.

On 29 October 1955 the No. 1 well near Black Oil Mountain produced an industrial oil flow, and the Karamay oilfield was discovered. The scenic area was rated a national 4A-grade scenic area in 2021 and has since added a ticket facility shaped like a poplar, oil-sandstone rest pavilions, an extended main walkway, research-study courses, cultural and creative products and a smart management system. A China Tourism News feature republished by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism counts Black Oil Mountain, with the Xigebi scenic area, among Karamay District's visitor attractions.

The sources give the site's position, its nature as a natural petroleum asphalt mound group, the 1955 discovery well, the 2021 rating and the scenic area's own recent works. They give no ticket or opening information.
