About World Devil City
The regional culture and tourism department's register describes World Devil City as a type of wind-eroded landform formed under arid, windy conditions. It runs north-west to east-west, is more than 5 km long and wide, and covers about 10 sq km at roughly 350 m above sea level. Wind-eroded rock masses inside it take forms that resemble halls, terraces, pavilions and forts, or people, birds and animals.
Karamay began work in 2013 on creating the site as a national 5A-grade scenic area, and after seven years it became one combining folk-culture experience, digital immersion, self-drive off-road tours, low-altitude flights and ice-and-snow attractions, with digital technology built in, according to a China Tourism News feature republished by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The general manager of the Karamay Devil City tourism development company told the paper that the area had received fewer than 200,000 visitors a year a decade earlier and now received a million, and that visitors who once left within two hours often stayed until late.
Those visitor figures are the operating company's statements reported in 2022 and are not carried forward here as current. The register's closing description of the site as one of the world's wonders is a comparison and is not repeated. Neither source gives ticket or opening information.
