About Taklamakan-359th Brigade Cultural Tourism Area

The regional culture and tourism department lists the area among the region's national 5A-grade scenic areas. Its page describes the area as centred on the 359th Brigade reclamation memorial hall, presenting the Corps' frontier-reclamation and border-defence culture and patriotic education, as a window on Aral City and the Corps' construction achievements, and as an important red-tourism base of the XPCC. The memorial hall itself was built to commemorate the Xinjiang Military District's First Agricultural Construction Division, which advanced into Xinjiang in 1950.

Xinhua records that the memorial hall was completed on 26 September 2009 and describes it as one of north-west China's largest revolutionary memorial halls. It has ten exhibition halls, among them 'Reclamation in the Western Regions, a Long History', 'A Heroic Force of Outstanding Merit', 'A Construction Army of Brilliant Achievement', 'Arduous Pioneering on the Wasteland', 'From All Quarters, Into the Corps', 'Mainstay and Iron Wall', 'Building Cities, Painting Home', 'Building Harmony, Heading for Comfort', 'Reclamation in the Western Regions, Through the Ages' and 'The Radio Wave That Never Fades', presenting the history of Corps units building modern farms and towns at the desert's edge.

The hall has been designated, among other things, a national 4A-grade scenic area, a patriotic-education base, a national ethnic-unity progress education base and one of the second batch of red-tourism bases — an open list. The 4A designation attaches to the hall in Xinhua's 2019 account, while the 5A listing attaches to the wider cultural tourism area in the department's 2022 register entry; the record states the two separately.
