About Urumqi
The regional museum provides context for journeys across the province, while Red Hill and the International Grand Bazaar offer different urban experiences. These city stops can be combined without confusing them with longer mountain excursions. Tianchi, for example, lies outside the city and needs its own road and scenic-area transport plan.
A city was built here in 1755 and received the name Dihua in 1763. It became Xinjiang's provincial capital in 1884, while a separate municipal administration was established in 1945. The present name was formally adopted on 1 February 1954. Earlier remains at Wulabo Ancient City (乌拉泊古城), in the southern part of today's municipality, are thought to mark a Tang-period county seat.
Mountains enclose the city on its eastern, southern and western sides, and the terrain slopes downward toward the north. The Bogda Mountains (博格达山) rise to the east, while the northern landscape opens toward the Gurbantunggut Desert (古尔班通古特沙漠). Watercourses include the Urumqi River (乌鲁木齐河) and Toutun River (头屯河).
