About Kunming
Green Lake offers causeways, pavilions and daily park life, while Yuantong Temple gives a nearby architectural focus. A separate outing to Haigeng or the Western Hills opens the landscape towards Dianchi. Stone Forest is a farther county-level excursion. Begin with the compact central sights, then choose one lakeside or mountain visit instead of treating all of Kunming’s attractions as one city walk.
The name is generally understood to have begun as the name of an ancient people in southwestern China, and it appears in Han-period records. Its use for the present city's locality dates to an administrative establishment in 1254. The city's earlier religious architecture includes eastern and western temple towers surviving from the Nanzhao period.
The plateau's monsoon climate is influenced by warm, moist air from the Indian Ocean. Long sunshine hours and a short frost period accompany an average annual temperature of 15°C. Red-billed gulls spend the winter in the city, and their seasonal presence has been recorded at Green Lake (翠湖) since 1985.
What to look for
- Green Lake’s causeways and pavilions form a central park circuit.
- Yuantong Temple adds a substantial Buddhist architectural stop in the central city.
- Dianchi’s north shore faces the Western Hills across open water.
Background & history
Kunming is the capital and largest city of the province of Yunnan in China. The political, economic, communications and cultural centre of the province, Kunming is also a major tourism centre in China. It is nicknamed the "City of Eternal Spring" for its year-round mild climate. During World War II, Kunming was a Chinese military center and the location of the headquarters for the U.S. Army Forces China-Burma-British Raj. Wujiaba Airport served as the home of the First American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Republic of China Air Force, nicknamed the Flying Tigers. Kunming was also a transport terminus for the Burma Road. Kunming is at an altitude of 1,900 metres (6,234 feet) above sea level and a latitude just north of the Tropic of Cancer, and is situated in the middle of the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau. Kunming is the fourth most populous city in Western China, after Chongqing, Chengdu, and Xi'an, and the third most populous city in Southwestern China after Chongqing and Chengdu.
