About Yuantong Temple

A stone bridge carrying an octagonal pavilion connects the entrance side with the hall, making water an unusually strong organising feature in the temple layout. The surrounding carved Buddhist figures add detail to the larger composition.

Begin with the view across the pond, then look at the pavilion and hall from closer range. Stone stairways on either side of the main hall lead towards the hillside and reveal another layer of the setting. This is a Buddhist temple with active worship, so keep the central route clear and follow restrictions around shrines and upper paths.

What to look for

  • The stone bridge and octagonal pavilion link the entrance with Yuantong Hall across the pond.
  • Carved Buddhist figures add detail around the main religious spaces.
  • Side stairways connect the temple with the rising hillside.

Background & history

Yuantong Temple (simplified Chinese: 圆通寺; traditional Chinese: 圓通寺; pinyin: Yuántōng Sì) is an ancient Buddhist temple in Kunming, Yunnan, China. It is located in a protected natural depression and in recent years it has been expanded with funding from Thailand. In the 1950s, it hosted a grand ceremony to greet and send on the sacred teeth of the Buddha and so became important in Southeast Asia.
