About Nanxun
Xiaolian Manor and Jiaye Library offer two different expressions of that prosperity, while the Baijian waterside houses show a broader residential landscape. Compare the enclosed garden and scholarly building with the canal banks rather than concentrating only on grand mansions. The town’s lanes and individual heritage compounds have different access arrangements, so select the houses or gardens to enter after choosing the public street route.
The town's name combines the first characters of Nanlin (南林), meaning Southern Wood, and Xunxi (浔溪), meaning Xun Stream. Its religious history includes the arrival of Christianity in 1860 through the American Methodist Episcopal Mission. The town's Protestant church was built in 1927 and forms a later layer of its historic building stock.
The Taoist Guanghui Palace was first established during the Northern Song dynasty. It was destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly, and its present form was completed in 2003. The town also retains bridges from the Ming and Qing dynasties. These surviving crossings accompany a garden tradition that encompassed as many as twenty-seven gardens between the Southern Song and Qing periods.
What to look for
- Xiaolian Manor and Jiaye Library connect merchant wealth with garden and book culture.
