About Shengsi Islands

Liujingtan opens onto the sea at the island’s eastern end, while Donghai Fishing Village uses painted house walls to tell stories of fishing work and local life. These provide a focused contrast between coast and community without requiring another island crossing. Gouqi, Shengshan and Huaniao need their own sailing plans; their presence within the same archipelago does not make them nearby walking stops.

The group occupies the northern part of the Zhoushan Archipelago (舟山群岛) and comprises 196 islands. The surrounding fishing grounds produce hairtail, cuttlefish and both large and small yellow croaker. Huanglong Island (黄龙山) is also associated with a local shrimp known as Huanglong mixia (黄龙米虾).

Huaniao Lighthouse (花鸟灯塔) was built by the British in 1870 on a headland at the northwestern corner of Huaniao Island (花鸟山). In 2001 it became a national protected cultural relic site (国家重点文物保护单位). On Sijiao Island (泗礁山), Dabei Mountain (大悲山) lies between western peaks and the open sea, forming a triangle with Jihu Beach (基湖沙滩) and Nanchangtu Beach (南长涂沙滩).

What to look for

Background & history

The Shengsi Islands or Archipelago (simplified Chinese: 嵊泗列岛; traditional Chinese: 嵊泗列島; pinyin: Shèngsìlièdǎo) are part of the Zhoushan Archipelago and located south of the mouth of the Yangtze (east of Hangzhou Bay). They comprise 394 islands, each with an area larger than 500 square metres (5,400 sq ft), but of which just 18 are inhabitable. The largest island is Sijiao Island with an area of 21.2 square kilometres (8.2 sq mi). The islands are administered by Shengsi County of Zhoushan City. The islands have a subtropical climate, with yearly average temperature of 15.8 °C (60.4 °F). The area is also notable as tourist destination and a fishery that attracts more than 100,000 fishermen every winter.
