About Foping Panda Valley
Foping County lies in the hinterland of the southern Qinling. The ministry route that includes the valley introduces the county as 大熊猫的故乡, the hometown of the giant panda, and as 中国熊猫第一县, and records that its wild giant panda population density and rate of increase are both the highest in the country, that it is the type locality of the Qinling subspecies of giant panda, and that it is where the world's first brown-and-white giant panda was found. A Xinhua report republished by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration puts the county's forest cover at 91.19 per cent and calls it a small county in the Qinling hinterland.
The route page describes the valley itself as a national 4A-level scenic area with two giant pandas living in the park, a landscape of layered peaks, murmuring streams and dense trees, and a Panda Forest Hotel built to resemble a wild giant panda's cave. It also gives the distance from the county town to the valley as about 30 kilometres, or about 30 minutes by car.
The Xinhua report, carried on the forestry administration's site, describes 佛坪熊猫谷 as a 4A-rated scenic area long known as 秦岭之窗, the window on the Qinling, with ridges and streams and mountain forest as its core features, natural scenery laid out in tiers, and a forest boardwalk through it.
How the two pandas are housed, and whether they are on view at all times, is not something either source describes; the county-level panda figures above belong to Foping's nature reserve rather than to the scenic area.
