About Li Zicheng's Temporary Palace
The compound covers 11,385 square metres with 4,600 square metres of building, laid out in terraces up the hillside. The gazetteer office page lists seven main parts – 乐楼, 梅花亭, 捧圣楼, 二天门, 揽胜楼 (later renamed 玉皇阁), 启祥殿 (the main hall) and 兆庆宫 (the sleeping hall) – and the Economic Daily report records 90 steps in two levels up the slope. The page calls the compound a complete surviving group of Ming and Qing buildings in the north-west region, and dates its construction to 1643.
Panlong Mountain was formerly called 马鞍山, and the site had been a small temple of the Jiajing period; the gazetteer office page records that Li Guo had the temple demolished and the palace built on its place, and that a stele recording his work once stood in the compound before being destroyed in wartime. After the Dashun regime fell, local people protected the buildings by putting them under the name 真武祖始庙, and the page records repairs in the fifty-sixth year of the Qianlong reign and the twenty-first year of the Guangxu reign. A Li Zicheng memorial hall was later set up in the palace, its name board written by 姚雪垠, with displays that the page lists as including a Li Zicheng commentary hall, an exhibition of Eastern Han pictorial stones and one on the history of Mizhi women, among others. On 25 May 2006 the State Council announced the site as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.
