About Daming Lake

Its shores and islands carry pavilions, gardens and memorial halls, making the lake more than an open stretch of water. Lixia Pavilion occupies an island near the eastern shore, while Huibo Building marks the old watergate controlling the outflow. Views between these structures reveal how the city combined practical water management with a landscape celebrated by poets.

The lake took its name from a former Daming Temple, recorded in the Northern Wei geographic text Shuijingzhu. It was called Lianzi Hu during the Tang dynasty, then West Lake or North Lake by the Song writer Zeng Gong (曾巩), before the Jin-dynasty writer Yuan Haowen (元好问) revived the name Daming Hu, which has remained in use. The lake's present extent was essentially fixed during the Western Jin Yongjia era, and while serving as prefect of Qizhou, Zeng Gong built pavilions, terraces, dikes and bridges there, establishing the basis of its current touring layout.

After dredging completed in 2010, the lake covers 0.58 square kilometers, with an average depth of 2 meters and a total storage of about 830,000 cubic meters; its water drains north through the old watergate into the Xiaoqing River. The lakebed consists of impermeable igneous rock, and together with its drainage system this gives the lake the property of neither rising in heavy rain nor drying up in drought. The Lake Center Pavilion (湖心亭), rebuilt in 1990 on a stone platform to a height of about 11 meters, is the largest square pavilion in Jinan.

Background & history

Daming Lake (Chinese: 大明湖; pinyin: Dàmíng Hú; Wade–Giles: Ta4-ming2 Hu2; lit. 'Lake of the Great Splendour') is the largest lake in the city of Jinan, capital of Shandong, China and one of city's main natural and cultural landmarks and tourist attraction. Located to the north of the historical city center, the lake is fed by the artesian karst springs of the area and hence retains a fairly constant water level through the entire year.
