About Lingyan Temple
The Thousand Buddha Hall is especially known for its painted arhat figures, whose varied faces and postures invite close attention. Pizhi Pagoda provides a taller architectural focus outside. Together with the small memorial stupas, these features make the visit a study of sculpture and monastic architecture rather than simply another mountain viewpoint.
Lingyan Temple was founded in the Eastern Jin dynasty and rebuilt beginning in the first year of the Zhengxing era of Emperor Xiaoming of the Northern Wei (520 CE), reaching its height in the Tang dynasty, when it was grouped with Guoqing Temple in Tiantai, Zhejiang, Yuquan Temple in Jiangling, Hubei, and Qixia Temple in Nanjing as one of the 'Four Great Monasteries' (四大名刹) under heaven. The monk Xuanzang (玄奘) once resided at the temple to translate Buddhist scriptures, and from the reign of Emperor Gaozong of Tang onward many emperors visiting Mount Tai for the feng and shan sacrifices also came to pay respects here.
The Thousand Buddha Hall (千佛殿) houses forty painted clay statues of luohan, thirty-two made in the Song dynasty and eight in the Ming dynasty; their lifelike, varied forms led Liang Qichao (梁启超) to call them 'the finest clay sculptures within the realm' (海内第一名塑). Pizhi Pagoda (辟支塔), an octagonal, nine-story pavilion-style brick pagoda 55.7 meters tall standing northwest of the hall, was begun in 994 and completed in 1057. The Stupa Forest (墓塔林), where the temple's abbots have been buried since the Tang dynasty, contains 167 memorial stupas along with 81 epitaphs and stone tablets.
