About Holy Trinity Church (Anglican)
The present nineteenth-century church replaced an earlier building and became an important place of worship for Shanghai’s English-speaking community.
Its position between Jiujiang Road, Jiangxi Road and Hankou Road places it among the commercial and civic buildings of the former treaty port. A garden separates the church from the Jiangxi Road street frontage. Begin with the exterior and garden setting; access to religious premises depends on the church’s current arrangements.
Before Holy Trinity was built, services for Shanghai's British community were held at the British Consulate. Thomas Chaye Beale of Dent and Co. donated the site, and the first church structure there was of poor quality, its roof collapsing after heavy rain on 24 June 1850. In 1893 a tall bell tower, strongly Gothic in style with a square plan, a pointed spire and four corner pinnacles, was added on the southeast side; it held an eight-tone bell that could ring psalm tunes and was, before the 1930s, long the tallest and most conspicuous landmark in Shanghai.
The spire was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution's 'smash the four olds' campaign in August 1966; it has since been largely restored, though the height of the restored spire remains limited. The church faces west, toward Jerusalem. In October 2019 it was listed, under the name Holy Trinity Christian Church (圣三一基督教堂), as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位), and it formally reopened on 12 December 2022, holding its first service on 18 December. The church now serves as an annex hall of the national headquarters of the China Christian Three-Self Patriotic Movement Committee and the China Christian Council (中国基督教三自爱国运动委员会和中国基督教协会).
