About Shanghai Museum East

It is the current home for the museum’s permanent Chinese collections according to the museum’s visitor information.

Ancient Chinese bronzes and sculpture are major themes, alongside other art forms represented in the museum’s collections. The scale rewards selecting a few galleries rather than attempting every room in one visit. Distinguish this branch from the People’s Square building when making reservations and transport plans: they are separate museum visits in different parts of Shanghai.

Preparations for the East branch began in 2015, and construction formally started on September 27, 2017. The building's steel structure topped out on December 31, 2020, and interior fitting-out began on April 14, 2023. The museum opened gradually from February 2024, starting with a trial opening of the Gallery of Ancient Chinese Bronzes (中国古代青铜馆) on February 2 and the Gallery of Ancient Chinese Sculpture (中国古代雕塑馆) on March 16; the Zhao Puchu Calligraphy Art Gallery (赵朴初书法艺术馆) was completed on November 11, and the branch was declared fully open on December 3, 2024.

The building covers a site of about 46,000 square meters, with a total construction area of 113,200 square meters, around three times that of the museum's People's Square building, and an exhibition area of about 33,600 square meters. It rises six storeys above ground and two below, to a height of nearly 45 meters, and was designed by a team from Tongji University (同济大学).

The East branch stands in the Huamu subdistrict of Pudong, bounded by Dingxiang Road to the east, Yanggao South Road to the west and Century Avenue to the north, facing the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (上海科技馆) and the Oriental Art Center (东方艺术中心) across the street.
