About Qibao Old Street
Qibao Old Street is the commercial heart of a historic water town in Shanghai's Minhang district. Its Nanbei Street, running north to south, has served as a trading street since the Ming and Qing periods. The old street seen today also reflects substantial restoration, including a major programme in 2002.
The combination of waterways, bridges and closely spaced shops gives the area its character. Municipal heritage material distinguishes the southern section's concentration of snacks from the northern section's small-goods trade. These are useful clues for a walk, although the individual tenants and products can change over time.
Look beyond the busiest food counters to see how side streets and water crossings connect the district. A short visit works best when it includes both the trading street and a view of the water. The name Qibao has several traditional explanations; stories of seven treasures should be treated as local tradition rather than a verified inventory of objects you will find on the route.
