About Xujiahui Origin
Xujiahui Origin (徐家汇源) is a group of cultural and historic sites in Shanghai's Xuhui District. Its buildings trace connections among education, religion, scientific enquiry and the history of exchanges between China and the West.
The district is associated with the scholar Xu Guangqi. Major stops include Xujiahui Cathedral, the old observatory now used for meteorological interpretation, Xujiahui Bibliotheca and Guangqi Park with the Xu Guangqi memorial. Their different functions are part of the interest: a church, library and observatory tell related but distinct stories.
Use the area's heritage map to select a small group of sites, then connect them through the surrounding city streets. Xujiahui Origin is not a single enclosed museum, and the operating arrangements of each building can differ. A first visit can focus on the cathedral and observatory setting before adding a library or memorial stop. Read the purpose of each institution before entering so the architecture has a clear historical context.
