About Anshunchang Ferry Crossing
Xinhua's account records that on the night of 24 May 1935 the Red Army raided Anshunchang and seized a single upturned-prow wooden boat, after which a 16-man river-crossing assault team was selected on the basis of party membership, cadre status and tactical skill. At dawn on 25 May, Sun Jixian led 17 soldiers across the river under heavy fire, helped by local boatmen and covering fire from the south bank. After the advance party crossed, two more damaged boats were found downstream at Anjingba; once repaired, 77 local boatmen ferried continuously for seven days and seven nights, carrying more than 7,000 troops led by Liu Bocheng and Nie Rongzhen across the river. The crossing site is described by Xinhua as having become a patriotic-education demonstration base and a classic red-tourism site.
The Museum of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army Forced Crossing of the Dadu River, reported by People's Daily Online, formally opened on 25 May 2004, its exhibition halls organised in three parts: the epic of the Long March, the forced crossing of the Dadu River, and the victorious junction. Beside the 'Red Army Ferry' stone marker in front of the museum stands a replica of the upturned-prow wooden boat used in the crossing, 10.5 metres long, 2.2 metres wide and 2.3 metres high. The site of the crossing is now a national key cultural relic protection unit and a national patriotic-education demonstration base.
