About Guanxian Ancient City and Nanqiao Bridge

The Dujiangyan gazetteer's register of protected sites lists eight national key cultural relics protection units in the city — among them the Dujiangyan irrigation works itself, the Guankou City God Temple and the Kuiguang Pagoda — and eight provincial-level sites, among them the Xuanwei Gate stretch of old city wall and the Confucian temple with its Kuixing Pavilion.

A China Tourism News feature carried by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism records that the old town has drawn on historic relic resources including the Confucian temple and the Tea Horse Road, has staged Sichuan opera performances and an old-town procession, and has assembled a group of landmarks around the 'first street of the Tea Horse Road', Xingfu Road, Nanqiao and a panda selfie point. The old town was created a national night-time culture and tourism consumption cluster in 2022, and the Confucian temple has hosted a first electronic music festival on a traditional-revival theme. None of the sources consulted describes Nanqiao's date, fabric or form, or gives it any protection status; it appears in them only as a named landmark of the district.

What to look for

  • The Confucian temple with its Kuixing Pavilion, registered as a provincial-level protected site.
  • The Xuanwei Gate stretch of old city wall, also a provincial-level protected site.
  • Nanqiao, named among the old town's landmarks alongside the 'first street of the Tea Horse Road' and Xingfu Road.
  • The Guankou City God Temple and the Kuiguang Pagoda, two more of Dujiangyan City's national key cultural relics protection units.
