About Jiajiang Thousand-Buddha Cliff

The scenic area covers about 4.5 square kilometers, bounded by Juxian Bridge to the east, Jinxiang Temple to the west, Daguan Mountain to the north and Yifeng Temple to the south, and combines cultural sites including the Tang-dynasty cliff carvings, Jinxiang Temple, Song-dynasty inscriptions at Zifu Cave, a hand-papermaking museum the county government describes as the first of its kind nationally, the ruins of an ancient plank road and a 'general's platform', the Juxian Street residential quarter, a Guandi Temple and a Jinlong Temple.

Jiajiang County's government describes the cliff carvings, cut into a cliff face about 600 meters long and 60 meters high on the Qingyi River's east bank, as one of Sichuan's five major cliff-carving grottoes, comprising 162 niches and 2,746 carved images begun in the Tang dynasty and continuing into the Ming and Qing, with subject matter touching, among other things, Tang-dynasty politics, economy, culture, architecture, folk custom and religion.

A survey by the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology gives a somewhat different count — 165 niches, 2,740 images and 15 inscriptions, divided into seven zones along the cliff — carved mainly in the mid-to-late Tang, with subjects including Maitreya, Amitabha, the Thousand-Armed Guanyin, Vaisravana, and transformation tableaux of the Vimalakirti and Medicine Buddha sutras.
