About Luxian Song Dynasty Stone Carving Museum

The museum occupies a 12,000-square-meter building with about 5,000 square meters of exhibition space across four floors, its interior divided into eight functional zones including display, collections storage, conservation and academic research. It holds over 14,000 catalogued items overall, including 550 grade-rated relics (120 first-grade, 145 second-grade, 285 third-grade), with Song-dynasty stone carving as the main focus of its four permanent exhibition sections, which together show over 300 objects.

Its signature piece is a high-relief Azure Dragon stone carving, 217 cm long, 66 cm wide and 17 cm thick, excavated in 2002 from Niutan Town in Luxian County; other display categories include the 'Four Divine Creatures' (Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, Black Tortoise), along with carvings of warriors, attendants, and musicians and performers, such as a carving of a female attendant holding a wine ewer beside a table and chair.

The Third National Cultural Relics Survey recorded Song-dynasty tomb clusters across every town and subdistrict in Luxian County, totaling 160 tomb groups and as many as 800 individual burials, of which 19 have since been designated cultural-relics protection units at various levels; Tang Lin, director of the Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences' art research center, describes the Luxian Song carvings as unrivaled nationally in scale, range, quantity, subject matter and craftsmanship.
