About Luoji Mountain

Luoji Mountain (螺髻山) is a high range in the southwest of Sichuan, in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture (凉山彝族自治州). It spans Xichang (西昌), Dechang County (德昌县) and Puge County (普格县).

The range begins south of Qionghai Lake (邛海) at Xichang and runs south along the boundary between Puge and Dechang; in all it is more than 50 km long. Peaks along it include Baibaiding (摆摆顶山, 4,182 m) and Dahuo Mountain (大火山, 3,959 m). The main peak, Ye'eyu Peak (也俄额喻峰), stands at 4,359 m; its outline recalls a green conch shell or a hair bun coiled like a snail shell, and that likeness gave the mountain its name.

Sichuan Online describes the scenic area as an intact natural museum of Quaternary glaciation, rare among China's known mountains. Large tracts of primary forest survive on the mountain, and the recorded fauna includes antelope, water deer, red pandas and leopards. The Sichuan provincial government put it in its first batch of provincial scenic areas in 1986, covering 1,083 km². According to the Sichuan Daily, it became a national scenic area in 2002 and a national AAAA-rated tourist attraction in 2006, and Liangshan began work in 2018 on raising it to AAAAA status.

Visitors ride a cable car up the mountain, and the Cloud-Viewing Platform (观云台), a popular photo spot, looks down on banks of cloud when the mist clears. A walking trail leads on to Black Dragon Pool (黑龙潭), a lake at over 3,600 m whose water is clear enough to show the gravel on its bed. In Qiaowo Town (乔窝镇) of Puge, the Luoji Jiushijiuli (螺髻九十九里) area is the core of the scenic area: more than a hundred hot-spring cascades form a band over 200 m wide, and radon spring water at about 40°C issues from the cliffs into pools. In November 2025 the scenic area held a Yi New Year event, with intangible-heritage performances beside Black Dragon Pool.
