About Xishan Scenic Area

The scenic area is formed by hills including Wufeng, Rentou, Guanbao, Qile, Huofeng, Ma'an and Chaqi, encircling the city's west side, with a highest point of 480.7 meters at Qileshan's main peak, which rises over 200 meters above the city; the Xihe river winds past the hills' base toward the Jialing River. Three of Nanchong's eight classical scenic sights are located here: 'Golden Spring Moonlit Night', traditionally linked to a legend about the fengshui master Yuan Tiangang; 'Guoshan Autumn Colors', known for its fruit-tree and locust-grove hillsides; and 'Qile Sacred Pond', a mountaintop pool locals say never dries regardless of drought.

Per textual research by a China West Normal University professor, the Ming-dynasty scholar Cao Xuequan recorded in his 'Shuzhong Guangji' that Chen Shou lived in seclusion on the hills and that a Wanjuan Lou stood at their foot. The government rebuilt Wanjuan Lou in 1990, relocating it from the foot of Guoshan to Yuping Mountain; in November 1993 it hosted the first China-Sichuan International Three Kingdoms Culture Symposium, which designated it the symposium's permanent venue.

Three named scenic areas are now built within Xishan: Wanjuan Lou, Kaihan Lou and Qile Temple, alongside sites including the East Gate, the Qiao Gong Shrine and tomb of the scholar Qiao Zhou, Zhaohu Temple, and Chen Shou's former residence. The area is a provincial-level scenic area and a national AAAA-rated tourist attraction.
